After training as an opera singer, he moved to New York in 1973. With heavy white makeup, eccentric clothing, and a countertenor voice, he quickly became a sensation in the underground scene in the early 1980s, performing original compositions and quirky covers ranging from arias to pop music. Hearing rumors of his performances, David Bowie commissioned him to design costumes and provide backing vocals for an NBC TV "Saturday Night Live" special. His appearance on the show generated significant buzz, catapulting him to popularity. He released his first album in 1981 and his second in 1982, but by this time, his body was already ravaged by AIDS. He passed away on August 6, 1983, at the young age of 39.
