Contents: Glenn Gould was captivated by the music of Richard Strauss throughout his life. In 1962, he produced a program for CBC TV, and in 1966, he dedicated a chapter to Strauss in his four-part series, "Conversations with Glenn Gould." His official recordings for Sony Classical include the rare "Enoch Arden" in 1961, and his final recording was an early R. Strauss piano sonata (recorded in 1982). This album is a collection of Gould's performances that can be considered an homage to R. Strauss. It includes not only reissues of "Burleske" and the first movement of the Violin Sonata (which never had an official session recording) from CBC sources, but also four previously unreleased recordings. The CD features footage of Gould practicing "Burleske" at home around 1955, capturing him immersed in the work while playing the orchestral parts on the piano and singing along. It also includes three previously unreleased songs from a 1966 session with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, in addition to the previously released "Ophelia Songs."
