After graduating from university, he moved to New York. In 1964, he gained attention for participating in Jackie McLean's album. This led him to participate in albums by Booker Ervin, Roy Ayers, Horace Silver, and others, honing his skills. In 1968, he recorded his first leader album, "Charles Tolliver and his All Stars." However, despite the participation of many big names, the album was never released. So in 1971, Tolliver, together with Stanley Cowell, founded Strata East Records, a rare independent label at the time, and released an album. Throughout the 1970s, in addition to his own albums such as "Impact (72)" and "Compassion (77)," he released many albums by Clifford Jordan, Gil Scott-Heron, Pharoah Sanders, and others. After a long hiatus, he returned in the late 2000s. His big band album "With Love (06)" was nominated for a Grammy Award the following year. In 2020, he released "Connect," and he continues to be active, mainly in live performances.
