In 1977, he made his first recording during a Japan tour as a member of the J.J. Johnson Quartet. From 1978, he spent six years in Freddie Hubbard's band, deeply absorbing post-hard bop jazz. He made his solo debut in 1985 with his self-produced album "Midland." He then consistently released three albums on Windham Hill, including "Take For Example, This" in 1988. After that, he moved to Chick Corea's Stretch label, releasing albums such as "I've Known Rivers" in 1995, establishing himself as a leading figure in sophisticated piano jazz. In the 2000s, he pioneered his own unique field of jazz chamber music (jazz chamber ensemble), releasing innovative works. His 2006 album "Lyric, Jazz-Chamber Music Vol. 1" won a Grammy Award, solidifying his reputation as a composer.
