In her early twenties, she was active in Houston and Austin, Texas. She then moved to Jackson, Mississippi, and in 1974 sent a demo tape to Smithsonian Folkways, which gave her an opportunity to record. She then released "Ramblin'" in 1979 and "Happy Woman Blues" in 1980. In the 1980s, she moved to LA and was active in a band that incorporated rock elements. Lucinda Williams released her 1988 album "Lucinda Williams." The song "Passionate Kisses" from the album was covered by Mary Chapin Carter and won a Grammy Award. She finally broke through with "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" in 1998. She won another Grammy the following year, solidifying her position as a truly accomplished artist. She continued to release albums consistently, including "Essence" in 2001 and "Blessed" in 2011. In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she released six cover albums of songs by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles as part of her "Lu's Jukebox" series of online studio concerts. Her latest original album is "Stories from a Rock 'n' Roll Heart" from 2023.
