We Shall Not Be Released Minus 5 is a band formed in 1993 by Scott McCoy, a Seattle-based multi-instrumentalist who has also been a sub-member of R.E.M. since the 90s. The original members were Peter Buck of R.E.M., and John Ower and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies. They released their debut album, "Old Liquidator," in 1995. In 1999, they participated in Moby Grape's tribute album to Skip Spence. In 2003, they released a collaborative album with Wilco titled "Down With Wilco," followed by a 5-LP box set in 2014 and "Dungeon Golds" in 2015. In 2016, they released a tribute album to The Monkees, "Of Monkees and Men." In November 2017, Scott suffered a stroke but made a miraculous recovery, releasing "Stroke Manor" in 2019 and the Neil Young tribute album "Calling Cortez" in 2023. Scott has also participated in many other units and albums, including Young Fresh Fellows, Baseball Project, Venus 3, and Tweedy.
