At the age of 21, he signed a songwriting contract with Fame through an introduction by David Hood, and in 2001 joined Hood's son Patterson's Drive-By Truckers. He participated in three albums, contributing not only guitar and vocals but also many songs. After leaving the band in 2007, he made his solo debut with 'Sirens of the Ditch'. In 2009, he formed Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit and released two albums. In 2013, he gained attention with his acoustic solo album "Southeastern," and in 2015, "Something More Than Free" reached number one on the Billboard Rock, Folk, and Country charts, and won two Grammy Awards, including Best Americana. In 2017, he won another Grammy for "The Nashville Sound." In 2020, he released "Reunions," and in 2021, "Georgia Blue." He also contributed music to the Lady Gaga film "A Star Is Born" and made his acting debut in Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon." In 2023, he won another Grammy for "Weather Veins."
