Born to a gospel singer mother, he began singing at the age of four and performed with his siblings in the gospel group, The Rising Suns. At 17, he moved to Philadelphia and even opened for Otis Redding. In the 1970s, he joined the funk band Moorish Vanguard and released the song "The Sunset Of Your Love," which he also produced. However, he had a dispute with James Brown over his contract, and subsequently left the music industry for 17 years from 1980 onwards. He made a late-blooming debut in 1998 with "Steppin' Out." After another hiatus due to illness, he made a comeback in 2007 with "Blues In The Pocket." He then moved to California and joined Anthony Paul's band, releasing albums such as "Soul for Your Blues" (2013) and "Not Goin' Away" (2015), which won numerous music awards, including the Blues Music Awards. In 2018, he signed with Nora Blue, and in 2020, "All My Dues Are Paid" was nominated for a Grammy. After a long battle with illness, he passed away in June 2020.
