I Can't Help Myself (Sugarpie Taj Mahal, whose real name is Henry St. Clair Fredericks, was born in New York in 1942. Born into a musical family, he learned various instruments from a young age. In the early 1960s, while studying agriculture at the University of Massachusetts, he began his musical career under the name Taj Mahal. In 1964, he moved to Los Angeles and formed the Rising Sons with Ry Cooder and others. In 1966, they released the single "Candy Man" on Columbia Records and also produced an album, but it was never released (it was released in 1992), and the band disbanded. After that, he began a solo career, and with a band featuring guitarist Jesse Ed Davis as his backing band, he released "Taj Mahal" and "The Natch'l Blues" in 1968, and the double album "Giant Step/De Ole Folks at Home" in 1969, both of which received critical acclaim. Since then, he has continued to release albums of roots music from around the world, including not only blues but also reggae, Cajun, gospel, Hawaiian, Caribbean, and African music, winning numerous Grammy Awards for albums such as "Senor Blues" (1997) and "TajMo" (2018). He continues to influence many musicians as a unique and unparalleled artist.
