After graduating from high school, he formed Hourglass with his brother Duane and released two albums before they disbanded. Then, in 1969, he formed the Allman Brothers Band and released "S.T.", "Idlewild South" in 1970, and "At Fillmore East" in 1971, achieving a breakthrough. Although Duane died in an accident in 1971, his 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters" became a huge hit. He released his first solo album, "Laid Back," that same year, and "Playin' Up a Storm" in 1977. The band subsequently disbanded and reformed several times. In the 1980s, he focused on his solo career, and his 1987 album "I'm No Angel," released by Epic, became a hit. He released "Just Before the Bullets Fly" the following year, but it did not achieve the same level of success. He continued to release albums such as "Searching for Simplicity" in 1997, "Low Country Blues" in 2011, and "Southern Blood" in 2017, but after 2007 he suffered from illnesses including cancer and passed away in 2017 at the age of 69.
