In the early 1960s, he joined the Paul Butterfield Blues Band as lead guitarist. He is famous for participating in the recording of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" in 1965 and for backing him at the Newport Folk Festival. His debut album (S.T.), released that same year, and "East West" in 1966 are still talked about today as masterpieces that popularized white electric blues. However, in 1967 he left the band and moved to San Francisco. He formed Electric Flag with Nick Gravenites and Buddy Miles, and after performing at the Monterey Pop Festival, released their first album "A Long Time Comin'" in 1968. However, he left the band again after this one album, and this time he sparked an improvisation boom with "Super Session" and "Miracle at the Fillmore" with Al Kooper. In 1969 he released his first solo album, "It's Not Killing Me". In the late 1970s he released several albums on independent labels, including Tacoma, but died of a drug overdose in 1981. He became a legendary guitarist, inspiring many followers.
