Cowboys & Indians 11. Mercedes Benz Bob Neuwirth was born in Ohio in 1939. He studied at the Boston College of the Arts and was active in the folk music scene of the time. In the early 1960s, he became close friends with Bob Dylan and served as his tour manager for his 1965 UK tour (he appeared in films such as "Don't Look Back" and it is well known that his lower half is visible on the cover of the classic album "Highway 61 Revisited"). In 1970, he improvised "Mercedes Benz" with Janis Joplin and also introduced Kris Kristofferson's song "Me and Bobby McGee" (both included on the classic album "Pearl"). He later moved to LA and released his late-blooming debut album, "Bob Neuwirth," on Asylum in 1974. The album wasn't a hit due to insufficient promotion, but it gained a cult following thanks to the participation of many famous guest artists and the quality of the songs. He had little notable activity after that, but 14 years later, in 1988, he toured with "Back to the Front," and in 1994 he released "Last Day on Earth," a collaboration with John Cale. He also worked as a producer and painter, but passed away in 2022.
