He learned piano, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, and oboe in his teens. At the age of 20, he performed as a pianist with Hubert Laws and others. In the 1970s, based in LA, he was active in various bands across different genres, working with Sergio Mendes, Freddie Hubbard, Dianne Reeves, Steely Dan, Chaka Khan, and others. In 1992, he made his solo debut with "Cauldron" on Windham Hill. Since then, he has released more than 10 leader albums, including "Letter To Herbie" in 2008, "Positootly" in 2009, and albums with the big band Monkestra, and has been nominated for a Grammy Award 12 times, winning twice. He has also composed music for numerous TV shows such as "Star Trek" and films such as "The Shawshank Redemption" and the James Bond series. The Frankfurt Radio Big Band, on the other hand, is a 17-piece jazz orchestra. Jim McNeely has been conducting it since 2011, and this will be their fourth collaboration, having worked with Beasley several times in the past.
