The current members are Colin Meloy (vocals, guitar), Chris Funk (guitar and many other string instruments), Nate Querrey (bass), Jenny Conley (keyboards), and John Moen (drums), all original members. They released their debut EP "5 Songs" in 2001, attracting attention with their unique folk-rock sound. They made their album debut in 2002 with "Castaways and Cutouts." After that, they released albums such as "Picaresque" in 2005, and in 2006 they released "The Crane Wife," their major label debut with Capitol Records. It received high praise from many media outlets, including NPR. They steadily gained fans through tours and video works, and in 2011, "The King Is Dead" finally reached number one on the Billboard charts. The song "Down by the Water" from the album was nominated for a Grammy. Despite illness among the members and Meloy's solo activities, they have released two more albums and have maintained their strong popularity.
