Whatever Happened To Dobie Strange? Rick Estrin was born in San Francisco in 1949. He picked up the harmonica at age 15 and started playing in Black clubs at age 18. He performed with Lowell Fulson and ZZ Hill, and honed his skills backing Fillmore Slim and Roger Collins. At age 19, he moved to Chicago and played with many bluesmen, including Muddy Waters. He later returned to the Bay Area and in 1976 formed Little Charlie & The Nightcats with guitarist Charlie Beatty, where he served as frontman. The band gained popularity as a live act and released their first album, "All The Way Crazy," on Alligator Records in 1987. They continued to release nine albums consistently, and in 1993, they won the WC Handy Award for "Night Vision." In 2008, Charlie retired (he passed away in 2020), and with the addition of guitarist Kid Andersen, they continued as Rick Estrin & The Nightcats. In 2009, they released a total of four albums on Alligator, starting with "Twisted," and have since become a flagship band, performing worldwide, primarily in Chicago and on the West Coast.
