He rose to prominence as a songwriter, contributing songs such as "Born In Chicago" to the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's 1965 debut album. He later moved to San Francisco and formed Electric Flag with Mike Bloomfield and others. They released "Long Time Comin'" in 1967 and "Electric Flag" in 1968. In parallel, he also worked on music for films such as "Steelyard Blues." He also wrote songs for Janis Joplin, including "Buried Alive in the Blues." He also served as the lead singer for the reunited Big Brother and the Holding Company. In the 1980s, he released solo albums such as "Blue Star" in 1980, "The Usual Suspects" with the unit in 1981, and "Monkey Medicine" in 1982 with the Gravenites Cipollina Band. As a producer, he worked with Otis Rush and Southern Comfort, was nominated for a Grammy Award, and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2003.
