Influenced by Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield, he began his musical career while still a student. In 1986, while at the University of San Francisco, he joined the spoken word band The Beatnigs. In 1991, he formed Disposable Heroes of Hip Hop Lisie and released "Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury" in 1992. His sound and lyrics, full of political and social messages, attracted attention, leading to his selection as the opening act for U2's tour. In 1994, he formed Michael Franti & Spearhead and released "Home" on Capitol Records. Their sound, which blends reggae, hip hop, funk, rock, and blues, along with their message-driven songs, received high praise. He continued to release albums consistently, with "The Sound of Sunshine" becoming a huge hit. He also gained popularity in Japan, having visited numerous times for festivals such as Fuji Rock and live performances. In addition, he travels the world as an activist, actively working on peace and social issues. He currently resides in Bali.
