In 1967, he formed Traffic with Steve Winwood and others and debuted with the album "Mr. Fantasy". He continued to perform with the band until 1971, despite several departures and rejoinings. As a session musician, he participated in albums by Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, and toured with Delaney & Bonnie, Eric Clapton, and George Harrison. He then shifted his focus to solo work after releasing "Alone Together" in 1970. After moving to Columbia Records, he produced a large number of albums, including "It's Like You Never Left" in 1973, "Dave Mason" in 1974, and "Let It Flow" in 1977, all of which charted. He also showcased his songwriting talent, producing hit songs such as "Only You Know and I Know" and "We Just Disagree." Although he was less active in the 1980s and beyond, he toured with Steve Cropper in 2018 and released "Alone Together, Again" in 2020, showing that he is still going strong.
