Born in 1941 to a father who ran a record shop, he grew up surrounded by various kinds of music. He began his career as a guitarist under the name Mac Rebennack in his teens, but after injuring his left hand at the age of 20, he switched to piano. In the mid-1960s, he moved to Los Angeles and began working as a studio musician. After joining the Wrecking Crew and other groups, he made his solo debut in 1968 with "Gris-Gris" on Atco Records. In 1972, he released his masterpiece "Gumbo," followed the following year by his biggest hit, "Right Place Wrong Time," which reached number 9 on the US charts. His 1989 song "Makin' Whoopee" won him a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, and he has won a total of six Grammy Awards throughout his career. In recognition of his contributions to spreading the New Orleans sound and his immense influence on the music world throughout his more than 60-year career, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 77 due to a heart attack.
