Spirit Gatherer Cahil El Zabar was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1953. He grew up near the Southside as one of three brothers. After graduating from high school, he went on to Kennedy King University. He later studied at Malcolm X University and other institutions. Interested in drums and percussion, he went to the University of Ghana in Africa in 1973 to study African music. At the age of 18, he joined the AACM, a music group of avant-garde Black musicians, and became its chairman in 1975. At the same time, he formed the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and the Ritual Trio. Beginning with "Three Gentlemen From Chicago" in 1981 and "The Ritual" in 1986, they have consistently released dozens of albums to this day. Their original African spiritual jazz has received high acclaim, and they have collaborated with many famous artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, and Pharoah Sanders. Coincidentally, shortly after recording this tribute album to Don Cherry, "Spirit Gatherer," and performing a live show in London with the same members, Don's son, David Ornette Cherry, passed away suddenly at the age of 64.
