Here lies the origin of their later spectacular success at Motown and Buddha. About the Artist: Gladys Knight was born in Georgia in 1944. In 1952, at the age of eight, she won a nationally televised amateur night in New York, instantly gaining attention. At the same time, she formed The Pips with her siblings and cousins, and debuted in 1958 with "Whistle My Love" on Brunswick. Then, in 1961, they released Johnny Otis's "Every Beat of My Heart" on the HumTom label, which reached number one on the R&B charts. That same year, the recording was given to Vee-Jay and re-released. Furthermore, they signed with Bobby Robinson's Fury Records, a renowned New York producer, and re-released the song a third time. Their hit single "Letter Full of Tears," written by Don Covay, and their first album also contributed to their growing fame, but Gladys went on maternity leave. They made a comeback in 1964, releasing more singles than Max and their second album, "Gladys Knight," in 1965. However, in 1966, Max's president joined Motown, and they moved with him as well.
