About the Artist: New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers started in November 2007 with a session between Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi All-Stars, who had known each other for some time, and Jimbo Mathis, formerly of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. They were later joined by the legendary Charlie Musselwhite, whom they met through Mavis Staples, and Alvin Youngblood Hart. Finally, Jim Dickinson, a core member of the Dixie Flyers (the house band at Criteria Studios), joined, completing the band. In 2008, each member brought their own songs, and they all sat in a large circle in the studio, taking turns singing and improvising, which they then recorded. Producer Jim Dickinson passed away in 2009, and the nearly completed recordings were shelved. Now, however, Canadian label Stoney Plain Records approached Luther, expressing their desire to release the album, which he has completed and is finally seeing the light of day. There are still many more recordings to be made, and Volume 2 is already planned for spring 2021.
