About the Artist: James Cotton was born in Mississippi in 1935. Inspired by Sunny Boy Scots, he picked up the harmonica. In the 1950s, he moved to Memphis and joined Howlin' Wolf's band. He gradually rose to prominence, and in 1953, he made his solo debut with the single "Cotton Crop Blues" on Sun Records. Later, he moved to Chicago and in 1957, joined Muddy Waters' band. In 1967, he left the band and released his first solo album, "Cut You Loose!", on Vanguard Records. After releasing several more albums, in 1974 he finally released the masterpiece "100% Cotton" on Buddha Records. With a powerful band including guitarist Matt Murphy and drummer Kenny Johnson, he established his unshakeable position with his innovative funk-blues sound. In 1975 he released "High Energy," produced by Allen Toussaint, and in 1976 he released the quintessential live album, "Live & On the Move." His subsequent success is well known. He consistently released albums on Alligator and Telarc and won Grammy Awards. In March 2017, he brought his long career to an end.
