Media Reviews and Other Comments: This is a deeply moving and beautiful performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, infused with emotion in every detail. When thinking of Kobaken, one usually pictures his theatrical, intense expressions and the fiery build-up at climaxes that earns him the nickname "Flame Kobaken." However, in this performance of the Ninth, the soft, straightforward sound and natural breathing left a strong impression. Of course, the end of the fourth movement is heated, and there are familiar Kobaken-esque expressions such as the momentary pauses at crucial moments (like the coda of the first movement) to create dramatic build-up, and the exaggerated intonation in the recitative of the fourth movement. However, this time it may be more restrained than usual. Of course, fans of Kobaken know how wonderful his lyrical expression is, so this is nothing to be surprised about, but I am pleased that this performance of the Ninth Symphony, with the superb ensemble of the Japan Philharmonic, fully showcases his finest qualities. Also, be aware that there are quite a few of those growling sounds again this time, so those who dislike them should be cautious.
