Their new album, "Bleeds," produced once again by Alex Farrar, will be released by Dead Oceans. Wednesday will release their long-awaited new album, "Bleeds," on September 19th via Dead Oceans. A captivating collection of narrative-rich Southern rock, this album thoughtfully explores the vivid connection between curiosity and confession, much like many of the most memorable tracks in the North Carolina band's discography. "Bleeds" is a masterpiece that skillfully blends literary allusions and outlaw grittiness, place-based poetry and spine-chilling noise like a patchwork. Karly Hartzman, the band's founder, frontwoman, and principal lyricist, says Wednesday's strong sense of identity is thanks to collaborations on past albums and their rewarding yet demanding touring schedule. Like "Rat Saw God," one of the defining rock and roll records of the 2020s, "Bleeds" was recorded at Drop of Sun in Asheville and produced by Alex Farrar, who has been involved in recording since "Twin Plagues." Hartzman once again brought demos to the studio, where she and bandmates Xandy Chelmis (lap steel, pedal steel), Alan Miller (drums), Ethan Baechtold (bass, piano), and Jake "MJ" Lenderman (guitar) worked together as a team. They skillfully blended country authenticity, indie-pop hooks, and noisy sludge, adding volume to the songs. And more than ever, that precise balance depended on the lyrics. Beyond tone and themes, the very sound of the words and Hartzman's remarkably subjective approach to detail selection are also contributing factors. Karly Hartzman, who writes most of his songs in his bedroom in Asheville, North Carolina, started playing guitar after watching Mitski's NPR show "Tiny Desk." He attended college in Asheville and released the album "Yep Definitely" under the name Wednesday. He then officially assembled a band and released his second album, "I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone," in 2020, followed by his third album, "Twin Plagues," in 2021. "Twin Plagues" received critical acclaim, being named one of Paste's best albums of the year and one of Pitchfork's best rock albums of the year. In September 2022, Wednesday signed with Dead Oceans and released the single "Bull Believer." Pitchfork selected the song as their Best New Track and also included it in their Best Songs of 2022. In April 2023, the band released their new album, "Rat Saw God." The album received high praise, including being named Best New Track by Pitchfork (8.8/10) and earning four stars from Rolling Stone. It dominated the year-end best album lists of various media outlets that year, reaching number one on Stereogum and Paste.
