"Tonky," his fifth studio album (third with Jagjaguwar), is a refined version of his 2023 album "Oh Me Oh My," which was selected as one of the year-end best albums by The New Yorker, Pitchfork, Paste, The Needle Drop, and others. The album features guest appearances from Isaac Brock, Angel Bat Dawid, Billy Woods, Alabaster de Plume, and Mary Lattimore. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1950, Holley has dedicated his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art and music are born from struggle and hardship, and perhaps more importantly, from intense curiosity and biological necessity, and are revealed through drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, and sound. Holley's sculptures are made from found materials, following the oldest traditions of African American sculpture. Objects already imbued with cultural and artistic metaphors are combined into narrative sculptures that commemorate places, people, and events. Holley did not begin making music or performing in a studio, and does not have the same creative process as typical musicians. His music and lyrics are improvised on the spot, changing and evolving with each event, concert, and recording. In Holley's original art environment, visual works were constructed and then deconstructed, their elements reused in new works. This often resulted in transferring individual narratives to new pieces, creating cumulative composite images with depth and purpose beyond the original single meaning. The layers of sound in Holley's music are similarly the result of decades of evolving experimentation. [TRACKLIST] 01. Seeds 02. Life (with Mary Lattimore) 03. Protest With Love 04.
