The title of Faye Webster's new album is inspired by the occasional urge to lose herself in the presence of an Atlanta Symphony Orchestra audience. "Going to the symphony orchestra was like therapy for me. I could get away from a time in my life that felt like a shitty period, and be in a slightly different world. I felt like I didn't belong, and I liked that," she says. The world around Webster may be moving faster than ever, but despite the influx of new fans and attention, she sings about it in an almost unbelievably understated way on her fifth album. In fact, when I first heard her voice on "Underdressed at the Symphony," she was navigating an unmapped space between comfort and caution. For Webster, there has never been a more comfortable time. This only adds to the sweetness of her unique style, which has propelled her to the forefront of the avant-garde among young independent artists. Webster may always be creating country-tinged indie rock that simultaneously incorporates pedal steel and modern R&B production/songwriting. This distinctive sound has earned her a passionate fanbase, making her a stealth superstar loved by everyone from Southern hip-hop heads to alternative rock tastemakers. At Webster's live shows, it's not uncommon to see these fans singing along to every single word. Even more interestingly, Webster doesn't even have a TikTok account, yet several of her songs, such as "Kingston," "Right Side of My Neck," "In a Good Way," and more recently "I Know You," have become hits on TikTok. On "Underdressed at the Symphony," recorded with her longtime band at Sonic Ranch studio in Texas, she celebrates experimentation, playfulness, and adventure. Vocoders, orchestras, unusual harmonies, and synths are used without sacrificing the expansive quality of Webster's previous songs, allowing each lyric to surface with increased meaning. Matt ?gPistol?h Stoessel's pedal steel adds exquisite sparkle, and Wilco?fs Nels Cline showcases emotional fretwork on many tracks. Self-taught on guitar in elementary school, and with a family of traditional bluegrass and country players, Webster was born to be a musician. She released her debut album, ?gRun & Tell,?h at just 16. Like teenage phenomena such as Jackson Browne and Laura Marling, her work displayed a lyrical and artistic clarity. She was deeply rooted in the culture of her hometown, Atlanta. Lil Yachty was a classmate, and in high school, she became friends with rapper/producer Ethereal. She then signed with Awful Records, becoming labelmates with Father, Playboi Carti, Ethereal, and others. It might seem a little strange to outsiders, but Webster shared the same art-kid spirit as them. Her self-titled album, released in 2017 on Awful, was enough to lead to a contract with Secretly Canadian. Two years later, she released "Atlanta Millionaires Club," which received critical acclaim. In 2021, she released her fourth album, "I Know I'm Funny haha," which was named Best New Album by Pitchfork and hailed as "one of the best records of the year."
