Synopsis: J Mascis's long-awaited new album, "What Do We Do Now," is complete. This is his fourth solo album, and his first in five years, featuring a band-driven sound with guest appearances. "What Do We Do Now" is J Mascis's first solo album since 1996. While this is clearly not a very aggressive release schedule, considering his live albums, guest appearances, and work with various other bands (Dinosaur Jr., The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, etc.), to borrow Lou Reed's words, "J's week is worth a year." "What Do We Do Now" began to take shape during the decline of the pandemic. Using his own studio, Bisquiteen, J started writing a series of songs on acoustic guitar with a different dynamism than what he writes for Dinosaur Jr. "When I write songs for the band, I'm always thinking about what would suit Lou and Murph. When I'm doing solos, even with lead guitar, I think more about what I can do with just one acoustic guitar. Of course, this time the rhythm part remains acoustic, but I added full drums and electric lead. Usually I make the solo parts simpler so that I can play them myself, but I really wanted to put in drums. Once that started, everything else fell into place. So in the end, it ended up sounding close to a band album. I don't know why I did it that way, but that's how it turned out," he says. Two guest musicians also participated in this album. Ken Mauri (member of the B52s) from West Massachusetts plays piano on several tracks. The other is Canadian psychedelic/folk/experimental musician Matthew ?gDoc?h Dunn, whom J met through Matt Valentine. "What Do We Do Now" has a set of some of the best solo songs J has ever written, and it's presented perfectly. When asked if he would be touring for this album, J said he plans to tour a few times on weekends, but he won't be forming a band. He is confident that these songs would sound great solo or acoustically, but the album's arrangements are truly fantastic, adding a cool and different element to Mascis's instantly recognizable approach to sound production. J Mascis is best known as the singer, guitarist, and main songwriter of the alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr. Dinosaur Jr was a trio formed in 1984 by J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph, and they released their debut album, Dinosaur, on Homestead in 1985. They moved to the major label Sire with their 1991 album Green Mind. They continued to release music but disbanded in 1997. The band reformed in 2005. In 2007, Dinosaur Jr. released their first album since their reunion, "Beyond," followed by "Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not" in 2016, and their latest album, "Sweep It Into Space," in 2021. Meanwhile, J Mascis released the acoustic live album "Martin + Me" as a solo artist in 1996. After Dinosaur Jr. disbanded, he released "More Light" (2000) and "Free So Free" (2002) under the name J Mascis + The Fog, and "J and Friends Sing And Chant For Amma" under the name J Mascis and Friends. Then, in 2011, he released his solo debut studio album, "Several Shades of Why," on Sub Pop.
