The shoegaze giants' fifth album is a work in which the classic band continues to raise their voice towards the future, encompassing a duality of familiar inner language and the exhilaration of a new beginning. Here, Rachel Goswell (Vo/G), Neil Halstead (Vo/G), Christian Savill (G), Nick Chaplin (B), and Simon Scott (Dr) explore their immersive elemental sound. In 2023, Slowdive exudes a familial energy derived from their deep history. "Everything is alive" is dedicated to Goswell's mother and Scott's father, both of whom passed away in 2020. "Some of us have gone through deep personal turning points, and that turning point is reflected in the layered emotional tenor of Slowdive's music. 'Everything is alive' is heavy with experience, yet each note is calm, wise, and inevitably hopeful. Its unique alchemy subtly embodies both sadness and gratitude, a grounded sense of exhilaration," says Goswell. The album began with writer/producer Halstead creating demos at home. Experimenting with modular synths, Halstead initially envisioned "Everything is alive" as a "minimal electronic record." Ultimately, the band collectively decided to return to their signature reverb-laden guitars, but the initial concept permeated the songwriting as well. "We always come from slightly different directions, and the best place is where we all meet in the middle," says Halstead, adding Goswell, "When the five of us get together in a room, something unpredictable happens." The multi-year recording process began in the fall of 2020 at their familiar Courtyard studio, then moved to Oxfordshire, the Wolths in Lincolnshire, and finally returned to Neil's studio, Cornish. In early 2022, Shawn Everett (The War On Drugs, Alvays, SZA) joined the team, and six of the eight tracks were mixed. Slowdive is a shoegaze band formed in 1989 in Reading, England, centered around Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell. They signed with Creation Records and debuted in 1990 with the EP "Slowdive." After that, they released three albums: "Just for a Day" (1991), "Souvlaki" (1993), and "Pygmalion" (1995), forming a core part of the scene alongside My Bloody Valentine and Ride, but disbanded in 1995. Halstead and Goswell continued their activities with bands such as Mojave 3. In 2014, the band opened a Twitter account and announced their reunion. They toured and performed at Fuji Rock and other festivals around the world. In 2017, after their first single in 22 years, "Star Roving," they released their self-titled fourth album, "Slowdive," on Dead Oceans. The album was critically acclaimed, reaching number 16 on the UK charts and number 50 on the US charts.
