Introduction NoSo is a Korean-American artist based in Los Angeles. A finalist in NPR's "Tiny Desk Contest," her debut album, "Stay Proud Of Me," is released by Partisan Records (Idles, Fontaines D.C., Laura Marling). NoSo (real name: Abby Hwong), a non-binary Korean-American artist based in LA, will release her debut album, "Stay Proud Of Me," on July 8th via Partisan Records. NoSo wrote and recorded most of this album alone in her bedroom during quarantine. In the process, she also learned instruments other than guitar. The result is this deeply moving coming-of-age story that richly showcases NoSo's world. NoSo is an abbreviation of North/South, chosen to reflect Korea's position and the question many Korean-Americans inevitably face: "Which Korea are you from?" NoSo indirectly confronts the anxieties and frustrations that arise from being Asian American, ultimately making it feel like a healing experience for marginalized people. The power of "Stay Proud Of Me" stems from NoSo's universal kindness and unique perspective that resonates with many. The fusion of lyrics and captivating guitar playing feels like opening a door to a fantastical new realm, guided by honest emotions that break you down in one moment and fill you with joy the next. NoSo graduated from the USC School of Music (the same program as Remi Wolf, Muna, and King Princess) and was a finalist in the NPR Tiny Desk Contest in 2019. The single "Suburbia," featured on NPR's All Songs Considered in the fall of 2021, is inspired by the predominantly white suburbs of Chicago where NoSo grew up. NoSo has also already released "Honey Understand," a dark and groovy track that is a highlight of the album, which was inspired by a "very melodramatic script" that he wrote every night before going to sleep during quarantine.
