Nominated for four Grammy Awards and sweeping the Best Album of the Year awards, her critically acclaimed masterpiece album 'Punisher', released in the Japan Tour Edition, comes amidst the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. Love has a profound impact on our lives, personalities, and priorities, yet Phoebe Bridgers doesn't write many love songs. Her fourth release, her second solo album, 'Punisher', touches on this theme. To say she writes about heartbreak would be to sell her sorrowful wisdom. To say she writes about pain would erase all the quirky joy in her music. With the release of 'Punisher', she has become one of the wisest, most nuanced, and most prolific songwriters of our time. Bridgers is a rare artist with a sense of humor that doesn't mind instantly dismantling her own popularity. Many media outlets, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, GQ, Pitchfork, The Fader, and The Los Angeles Times, have lauded her, but she herself is more interested in discussing the humiliating process of being human with a blank expression on Twitter. She presents a cute and funny twist on the surprisingly sad songs she writes. Punisher is an album filled with these subtle tensions that are difficult to recognize, and it is what drove it to completion. Bridgers' unique talent lies in her intense curiosity about the unpleasant and painful, pushing it to the limit until she can find a beautiful or absurd answer, or faithfully report the reality that there is no such answer. Punisher was written and recorded from the summer of 2018 to the fall of 2019. The project was carried out in collaboration with Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska, who also collaborated on "Stranger In The Alps," and Bridgers himself, who co-produced Boygenius's EP and Better Oblivion Community Center's album, took on the role of co-producer on this album as well. The album features longtime bandmates Marshall Vore (Dr), Harrison Whitford (G), Emily Retsas (B), and Nick White (Key), as well as formidable guest appearances from Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, Christian Lee Hutson, Conor Oberst, Nathaniel Walcott (Bright Eyes), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Jenny Lee Lindberg (Warpaint), Blake Mills, and Jim Keltner. The mixing was done by Mike Mogis, who also worked on "Stranger In The Alps." Released worldwide on June 19, 2020, "Punisher" swept the year's best album awards (*) and was nominated for four Grammy Awards at the 63rd Grammy Awards (Best New Artist, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Alternative Music Album).
