Contents: Chicago duo Whitney have completed their new album. Produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Snail Mail) and John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten), their third album in three years, "Spark," is now on release. Chicago duo Whitney, consisting of Julien Ehlrich and Max Kakacek, will release their third album, "SPARK," produced by Brad Cook and John Congleton, on September 16, 2022, via Secretly Canadian. "SPARK" reintroduces Whitney as a contemporary syndicate of classic pop. Its 12 imaginative and endearing tracks envelop captivating melodies in paisley-patterned Dilla beats and lavish electronics, retaining the warmth and ease of their early work while shining with a modern freshness. The origins of 'SPARK' can be traced back to the unexpected success of Whitney's 2016 debut album, 'Light Upon the Lake'. Its soft, distorted psychedelic folk sound resonated with a wider audience than the duo had anticipated. As a result, after years of non-stop touring, they felt compelled to return to the same sound for their second album, 2019's 'Forever Turned Around'. Meanwhile, Max and Julien knew a drastic change was needed, and unexpectedly, lockdowns accelerated this process. "We had time to just sit back and watch the work grow in real time. We built stronger songs on top of each other," says Julien. "Our favorite way to make a record is the way we made our first one," Max adds. The duo, too, were not immune to the overwhelming sense of loss during this time. In December 2020, Max lost his grandfather to COVID-19, shortly after the death of their mutual mentor, JR White of Girls. But the key to 'SPARK' is that every song, even its saddest, shines like a gentle technicolor dream. Sublimation. This is Whitney's ability to stick with things long enough until conditions improve. 'SPARK' features frequent use of "smoke" and "fire," which have two meanings: creating something new and burning away the old. Whitney's situation was precarious in many ways, but they started again by "drying the past," and after the fire, they found a fresh version of themselves, their relationship, and their band. 'SPARK' is a moving testament to the patience and regeneration of best friends trusting each other to carry something from one place to another.
