Content Introduction Built to Spill, the indie rock legends led by Doug Marsh, have signed with Sub Pop. They will release their new album, "When the Wind Forgets Your Name," their first in seven years. On September 9, 2022, Built to Spill's new album, "When the Wind Forgets Your Name," will be released by Sub Pop. This is their first release since 2015's "Untethered Moon," and the album was produced by Doug Martsch. Mixing was done by Martsch, L? Almeida, Jo?o Casaes, and Josh Lewis, and mastering was handled by Mell Dettmer. The cover art was created by comic artist Alex Graham. "I've wanted to release something with Sub Pop since I was a teenager, so I'm very excited. I think I'm the first artist in their 50s that they've signed," says Martsch. "When the Wind Forgets Your Name" continues to expand the world of Built to Spill in new and exciting ways. In 2018, Martsch joined forces with Brazilian lo-fi punk artist/producer L? Almeida and Jo?o Casaes, a longtime collaborator of the psychedelic jazz-rock band Oru?. When a new backing band was needed for a live performance in Brazil, Martsch asked them to join. The Brazilian schedule worked out, and they continued playing together in 2019, deciding to tour the US and Europe as well. During soundchecks, the two learned new songs written by Martsch, and after the tour, they recorded bass and drum tracks at Martsch's rehearsal space in Boise. After their return home, Martsch began overdubbing guitar and vocals alone. Initially, the three planned to mix the album together somewhere in Brazil or the US in late 2020, but the pandemic prevented them from meeting in person. However, they were able to send each other tracks, which allowed for collaboration during the mixing process. This resulted in "When the Wind Forgets Your Name." Afterwards, Almeida and Casaes returned to their work with Oru?, and Martsch revamped the band's lineup, bringing in Teresa Esguerra of Prism Bitch on drums and Melanie Radford of Blood Lemon on bass. Built to Spill and Oru? are scheduled to perform together in September. Since the band's formation in 1992, Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch has positioned the band as a collaborative project, creating music and performing live as a constantly evolving group of musicians. "There are many reasons why I want to change the lineup. Every time we finish a record, I want the next one to have a completely different sound. It's fun to play with people who bring new styles and ideas," says Martsch. After releasing several EPs and albums on independent labels (including the acclaimed "There's Nothing Wrong with Love" released on Up Records), Martsch signed with Warner Brothers. During that time, he recorded six masterpieces: "Perfect from Now On," "Keep It Like a Secret," "Ancient Melodies of the Future," "You in Reverse," "There Is No Enemy," and "Untethered Moon."
