About the Artist: Chiaroscuro Records was founded in 1970 by producer Hank O'Neill, who later also worked as a photographer. The label's name originated from the Chiaroscuro Concerts held by Eddie Condon in the 1930s. Chiaroscuro actively produces new recordings of veteran swing artists, including Condon himself, and is a valuable label that preserves the golden age of American jazz. It is particularly known for producing many works by pianists such as Teddy Wilson, Earl Hines, Dave McKenna, Ralph Sutton, and Mary Williams, and has long been popular in Japan, where there are many piano jazz fans. Furthermore, many of their early works were designed by David Stone Martin, a beloved jazz LP jacket designer, making them a collection of albums that are sure to delight Japanese jazz fans, both in terms of content and artwork. Although O'Neill retired from the forefront after selling the label to Audiofile in 1978, Chiaroscuro continued to focus on promising young talents such as Jack Wilkins and Bill Charlap, giving them opportunities to release their own leader albums, and continued to release works by veteran pianists such as Junior Mance, Roger Kellaway, and Don Friedman, who are also part of the label's signature sound, with unwavering affection. That's Chiaroscuro, a high-quality American jazz label!
