This album is the first to be released on his newly established label, Shabaka Records. "Of The Earth" is an extremely personal work, with Shabaka himself handling the composition, production, performance, and mixing from start to finish. In this work, Shabaka organically connects the dance-oriented/rhythm-focused approach he has developed with Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming with the intricate, textural sound world he has pursued in his recent solo works ('Perceive its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace', 'Afrikan Culture'), clearly presenting a new contour of himself as an instrumentalist/producer. Beats and loops created with portable equipment while touring form the foundation of the songs, over which choral flute melodies soar. Electronic rhythmic sequences paint a narrative of diaspora-like journeys. Shabaka also tries his hand at rapping on this album, saying: "I was inspired by Andre 3000's fearless and sincere approach to exploring new dimensions. That's why I decided to find my own voice on this album." - Shabaka?x In mid-2025, Shabaka ended his self-imposed hiatus from playing the saxophone with a performance at a memorial concert for South African drumming legend Louis Moholo. ?wOf The Earth?x is the first recording made after a period of about a year and a half without playing the saxophone, and it is also a summary that re-examines what kind of future relationship with the instrument the time he has spent focusing on the flute will bring. D'Angelo's ?wBrown Sugar?x was the first CD I ever bought, and it sparked a long-lasting curiosity about the emotional possibilities that a self-produced/self-performed album can have. This work is a record to celebrate the freedom of creative self-expression. Before COVID-19, I could only play the clarinet and saxophone, and I knew nothing about music production or how to play the flute.
