A new sound reached after overcoming trials: UK electronic duo Malibou State releases their long-awaited new album! Malibou State, the UK electronic duo consisting of Chris Davis and Liam Ivory, who fuse delicate electronics, live instruments, and vocals, have released their new album "Hallucinating Love" on Ninja Tune. They gained global attention with their 2015 debut album "Portraits," and further enhanced their reputation with 2019's "Kingdom In Colour." Their work has been highly praised by major media outlets such as NME, Complex, GQ, Clash, and Crack Magazine, and Mixmag selected them as one of their "Artists Of The Year," while BBC 6 Music selected "Kingdom In Colour" as "Album Of The Day." Malibu State has also garnered immense support from prominent radio DJs such as Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw, Giles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamac, and Pete Tong, and has received strong support from KCRW and KEXP in the United States. For Malibu State, who have enjoyed such a smooth-sailing career, the creation of their newly released third album, "Hallucinating Love," proved to be their greatest challenge yet. 2020 was supposed to be a reset period to work on new material, but they quickly ran into trouble. Chris faced chronic insomnia and was diagnosed with ADHD, while Liam suffered from a severe anxiety disorder. Furthermore, the global situation at the time due to the coronavirus pandemic exacerbated their mental health problems. They discarded their initial album draft and began working on a new version to regain their creative momentum. However, at the end of 2021, Chris began experiencing chronic headaches, and in the spring of 2022, he was diagnosed with Chiari malformation, a rare disorder that causes compression of the brain. In November 2023, as the album neared completion, Chris successfully underwent surgery. This experience strengthened the bond between the two friends, who have been friends since their teens. Titled "Hallucinating Love," the album is filled with their friendship, the joy of performing in front of large audiences, and the triumph and sense of accomplishment from overcoming the difficulties of the past few years. "Hallucinating Love" is a work full of hope and challenge, featuring their signature intricate and beautiful ensemble work. It features wonderful guest vocals from longtime collaborator Holly Walker and MOBO Award nominee Andreja Triana. They also revealed that they collaborated more closely with other artists and drew great inspiration from recording sessions held in idyllic settings across the UK. Liam and Chris invited collaborators such as talented producer Jack Sibley and bassist Jonjo Williams, creating small communities in various locations as they continued to work on the album. Last year's lead single, "Blackoak," featured an amateur choir made up of friends, and was recorded on the stairs of an old country house where they were staying. Importantly, the duo reflects on the lineage of UK electronic music, including jungle, UK garage, IDM, and trance, and is acknowledging and celebrating their influence and their place within that history. Liam says, "Up until now, we've been very hidden in our projects, enjoying the ambiguity and anonymity. But as we've gotten older, we've wanted to show more of who we are. At the same time, it felt natural to point to British dance music culture, which is something we're really proud of." 01. Blackoak 02. Otherside 03. II Remember 04. All I Need 05.
