Woo Lu is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in South London. His previously released singles, including one featuring Black Midi drummer Morgan Simpson, have all received critical acclaim, garnering attention from major media outlets such as Fader, Mojo, Crack, and Quietus. Closely connected to the burgeoning UK band scene, he's creating a new wave of alternative rock in the UK with his unique style, and now he's releasing his latest work on Warp. This debut album, consisting of 12 tracks (with one additional track on the Japanese edition), is packed with explosive energy incorporating elements of post-punk, screamo, hip-hop, and more. The songs are colored by distorted yet smoothly accelerating guitars, a towering, impenetrable bass, drill-influenced triplet drums, and piano melodies. The album was created with members of the backing band in various locations, including London pubs and recording studios in Norway. It involved deconstructing, splicing together, and re-performing sampled sounds based on jam sessions. The sound freely moves between elements reminiscent of 1980s Factory Records, DJ Shadow, and early 90s Slipknot, drawing on past themes while creating a unique sound. Many of the songs deal with themes of anxiety and guilt, arguing that they can be overcome by "facing fear and shouting" and "people caring for one another." "Calo Paste" features Rhea Sen, combining beautiful string arrangements with powerful vocals and thick, layered, slow guitar sounds. "Blame" features the irregular electronic sounds of industrial music, overly bouncy breakbeat drums, and distorted lyrics delivered through a megaphone. "Night Pill feat. Asha" depicts a scene of people gathering at 3 AM to enjoy skateboarding, with the melody of a night bus played loudly on an electric guitar floating in the background like sagging power lines, and the low, rumbling energy of the sound swirls in a spiral, seemingly launching the entire song into the stratosphere.
