In 1972, when the dream of love and peace was shattered and the Vietnam War was drawing to a close, they released their first album, \"Preserve Wildlife.\" Lynn Carey's powerful vocals were reminiscent of Janis Joplin and Grace Slick, foreshadowing a new era of rock queens. Lynn had achieved success as an actress in the 1960s, appearing in TV series such as \"The Man from U.N.C.L.E.\" and \"Wild West,\" but she originally started her career as a singer. She jammed with Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Winter in clubs, and after recording with her musical partner Neil Merriwether, she formed Mama Lion. This album consists of 10 tracks, half originals by Lynn and Neil, and the other half rock\/soul covers. It features bold psychedelic hard rock arrangements of songs that remain well-known today, such as Bill Withers' \"Ain't No Sunshine\" (M1), The Temptations' \"Ain't Too Proud to Beg\" (M3), Roy Orbison's \"Candy Man\" (M5), Blind Faith's \"Can't Find My Way Home\" (M8), and Lynn Anderson's hit \"Cry\" (M10). With Lynn's star power, combining vocals and visuals, the band's edgy performances, and their unique arranging abilities, Mama Lion toured not only in their native America but also in Europe. In Japan, \"Ain't No Sunshine\" was released as a single simultaneously with the album, raising expectations for global success. Another notable aspect is the sexy album cover art depicting Lynn breastfeeding a lion cub. Because it was considered too provocative, the US LP version had a disguised cover to conceal her breasts, but the Japanese LP version at the time had her breasts exposed. Incidentally, around the same time as the release of this album, she graced the cover and spread of the American magazine \"Penthouse,\" truly a new star with both beauty and talent. After this album, Mama Lion released their second album, \"Give It Everything I've Got\" (1973), and then disbanded.
