Two extremely rare private pressings by the King of Downers, Dave Bixby, released in 1969 and 1970, are now reissued! The sound and vocals, so lonely and full of desolation, which were boldly sampled by Travis Scott in his 2023 song \"Parasail,\" are revived for the modern era! Dave's 1969 release, \"Ode To Quetzalcoatl,\" was a concept album about crawling out of the hell of drugs and finding peace in God. Despite being a private pressing LP with an estimated run of 500 to 1,000 copies, the album was well-received in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and his live performances at religious group meetings consistently drew hundreds of people. Riding on that momentum, his second album, \"Second Coming,\" was created. While Dave's solo album 'Ode To Quetzalcoatl' centered around his acoustic guitar and vocals, this album, released under the name Harbinger (meaning \"the one who proclaims the word of Christ\"), is a group album recorded by multiple members. All the lyrics and music are by Dave, but guitarist Brian MacInnes, who also participated in the previous album, has more instrumental parts, and Sandy Johnson's female vocals and Don Degraaf's bass add depth and breadth to the music. Unlike the previous album, which was recorded in an apartment living room, this album was recorded in a proper studio with Mike Genelarovich as engineer, and Dave's vocals are so realistic that you can hear even the sound of his breathing. The previous album had a dark sense of confinement, such as drug addiction and alienation, but this album depicts a more open worldview. From \"Cosmic Energy,\" which sings of \"cosmic energy,\" to \"Time To Clear Your Mind,\" which encourages meditation, and \"Ode To Elias,\" dedicated to the \"prophet to come,\" Elijah, the sound production that makes use of space is liberating. However, what is also characteristic of \"Second Coming\" is that Dave's new struggles are subtly revealed. Don Degraaf, credited as the bassist and producer of this album, was also the leader of the religious group \"The Group,\" and when this album was released in 1970, it achieved good sales among believers, but Dave reacted negatively to being elevated as a \"figurehead.\" This conflict is clearly expressed in \"Circus World,\" which depicts leaving behind \"a circus world full of games and nursery rhymes.\" In fact, after the release of this album, Dave parted ways with \"The Group,\" and this dramatic aspect is also one of its charms.
