The northeast holds almost sacred importance in Brazil's collective cultural imagination. This region witnessed the brutal history of Portuguese colonial rule and the African slave trade, while simultaneously being a melting pot of diverse cultures, religions, and traditions of those who called this land home. Countless Brazilian music giants, including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Hermeto Pascoal, Djavan, and Luiz Gonzaga, have emerged from this vast cultural melting pot. Born in Carualu, Pernambuco, and raised in Santa Cruz do Capibarive, a city famous for its textile industry, Felipe succinctly describes his music as \"Brazilian music born from the aggression of Pernambuco.\" His exceptional work weaves together the rhythms, folk songs, and refined harmonies of the region. Felipe's musical foundation was built listening to local elders rehearsing forr?, attending S?o Jo?o street parties held in front of his home, and watching the Festa Junina dances in the neighborhood. At the open-air markets, he read \"Literature de Cordel,\" a handmade, self-published booklet of Brazilian folk literature, and watched cantadores, violeiros, and repentistas improvise verse battles on themes of daily life, social commentary, and philosophy. The tradition of folk poetry in the northeast had a particularly profound influence on Felipe as a lyricist. \"I always try to write as simply as possible. I believe that beauty must be easy to understand. If it helps to facilitate the path to the message, there's no reason not to do so. This is something I learned from the traditional poetry of this region. It's more beautiful when everyone can understand it.\" Felipe first encountered the internet when he was 11 years old. He explains, \"Even though I was still a teenager, I was able to discover music like the Beatles and Nick Drake. I started to be exposed to world music, and later I began to connect it to my local musical experience.\" His work, characterized by rich chord progressions and skillful dissonances, clearly shows the influence of jazz and bossa nova. At the same time, he effortlessly avoids stereotypes. \"When Brazilian musicians play nylon-string guitars, people inevitably think of bossa nova... But my foundation is elsewhere,\" he asserts. \"This is Northeastern music.\" Felipe experimentally expresses the dual rhythms inherent in the traditional music of the Northeast on his guitar. They elevate rhythms like coco, frevo, maracatu, and bai?o into a new context, placing them alongside Brazilian popular music (MPB), gentle lullabies, and breathtaking ballads. \"With these 10 tracks, we're experimenting with creating pop music on nylon-string guitar, based on songbooks from the northeast.\" In recent years, Felipe, Bruno, and Batata have moved to the southern metropolis of S?o Paulo state, where much of the album was recorded.
