In 1945, while mobilized for labor at an army food base, he secretly listened to a record of Lucienne Boyer's chanson \"Let Me Hear Your Words of Love\" in his military barracks and was so impressed that he decided to pursue a career in music. From then on, he was almost entirely self-taught in composition, and made his debut as a composer in 1950 with the piano piece \"Two Lentos.\" In 1957, Stravinsky, who happened to be visiting Japan, heard his \"Requiem for Strings\" and praised it highly, which led to his worldwide recognition. His works span a wide range, from orchestral music to electronic music, film scores, stage music, and pop music. He also worked on pieces combining Japanese traditional instruments with orchestras, and his 1967 work \"November Steps\" remains one of his representative works, still performed by many orchestras today.
