Since their debut in 1994, Canadian band CRYPTOPSY has led the death metal scene with their overwhelming technique and ferocity, and now they drop their 8th original full-length album, their first in 11 years since 2012's 'CRYPTOPSY'. This is their first release since their 2018 self-produced EP 'THE BOOK OF SUFFERING - TOME II'. The title, Gomorrah, refers to a city mentioned in the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament, alongside Sodom. Its inhabitants were so immoral that they incurred God's wrath and were destroyed along with their inhabitants by fire and sulfur from heaven. The concept behind this album is to reinterpret the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, the cities of depravity, in the context of modern internet society. Matt Magakky's (vocals) idea was to show how the internet is both a breeding ground for invention and a hotbed of exploitation. The story is based on real-life incidents such as cyberstalking, cults, misinformation, isolation, and threats, but these are exaggerated. Cryptopsy's songwriting process has always been difficult and time-consuming, but this album, which took 11 years to complete, was even more challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Magakky explains: \"Songwriting was fragmented and difficult. We like to break ourselves down to get to the root of an idea. Add in songwriting sessions on Zoom and it becomes a brutally difficult situation. The reason this album took so long was simply because we couldn't be in the same room together. Everyone was in different places, and sadly the songs remained unfinished for a long time. But I'm glad Christian Donaldson pushed us forward. 'AS GOMORRAH BURNS' is our best work yet.\" The first session after the pandemic ended took place in a cabin in the woods of Quebec. The time spent in the studio was longer than expected, but Donaldson took the lead, and everyone being able to gather in the same room again after the pandemic gave 'AS GOMORRAH BURNS' new energy and speed.
