To cultivate her into a true top female singer, Wexler took Aretha to San Francisco, the most radical city at the time. Wexler deliberately chose the Fillmore West, a rock mecca that had been home to bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, as the location for her performances. The concerts took place over three consecutive nights starting March 5, 1971. Although most of the audience was white, Aretha, accompanied by King Curtis, Billy Preston, and Cornell Dupree, delivered an energetic performance that captivated the packed house. All three nights were recorded from the outset with the intention of releasing an album, and the impromptu performance by Ray Charles, who was in the audience on the final night, March 7, was brilliantly captured. It was truly a night when a miraculous collaboration between the King and Queen of Atlantic Soul was realized. The album, titled \"Aretha Live at Fillmore West,\" was released in June 1971 and rose to number 7 on the album charts, becoming Aretha's fifth gold album.
