From this standpoint, someone like Tatsuro Yamashita, who always handles everything himself in detail, from the intention behind the album's creation to the track-by-track explanations, is rather a challenge for reviewers. There is a risk of getting bogged down in a discussion about whether or not our interpretation falls within the scope of the creator's intentions. This album, as the title \"RARITIES\" suggests, is what Tatsuro Yamashita calls his \"hidden best,\" a collection of \"rare\" tracks not included on albums, such as single-only works, B-sides from singles, and unreleased self-covers. In that sense, there is the pleasure of following Tatsuro Yamashita's journey over the past 20 years from a slightly behind angle. As he himself notes about each track, in each case, these are not simply re-recordings of previously unreleased songs, but rather have been meticulously revised and processed with the perfectionist touch one would expect. There is no doubt that Tatsuro's \"present\" is condensed in some form, going beyond mere nostalgia. At the same time, it is well known that Tatsuro continues to have a strong attachment to certain genres from the 60s and early 70s, and that unwavering consistency is also evident. However, there is one thing I discovered, or rather, felt anew, after listening to the whole album. It is the frustration of feeling the \"times\" have come to mind, as if in step with the refinement and polishing of the sound, the impact of the lyrics (words) that they had when they were first released seems to fade. Compared to the speed of consumption of music, which is often said to be a disposable commodity in this day and age, does this mean that the erosion of words with the passage of time is even greater? Perhaps his next challenge will involve considering what to do with the lyrics as well.
