XL Recordings, the most important label transforming the modern music scene and paving the way for the future, has released a wide range of music genres, from artists currently touring Japan such as Thom Yorke, Radiohead, The Smile, and Fontaines D.C., a major force in the modern rock scene whose Japan tour has also been announced, to Overmono and BadBadNotGood. Their leader, Richard Russell, who has produced albums for Damon Albarn, Bobby Womack, Gil Scott-Heron, and others, has collaborated with XL Recordings to release their third studio album, 'Temporary'. Richard Russell's latest album, \"Temporary,\" produced over four years from 2020 to 2024, features a star-studded lineup including Noah Cyrus and Bill Callahan, who were recently featured on the single \"Porcupine Tattoo,\" as well as Sampha, Kamasi Washington, Jah Wobble, and Jack Pe?ate. Like his Mercury Prize-nominated debut, it was primarily recorded at Richard Russell's Copper House studio in West London, where a sign at the studio entrance reads, \"No need for outside reality.\" \"Temporary\" is a fresh and rebooted version of Russell's own musical DNA. His cut-and-paste approach, which he pays homage to, goes back even further than the heroes who first influenced him with sampling, The Bomb Squad and Prince Paul, to innovators of the combination technique such as Steve Reich, Robert Rauschenberg, and William S. Burroughs. While his music has traditionally been created in the order of rhythm, lyrics, and melody, in \"Temporary,\" the order of rhythm and melody is reversed, with rhythm playing a smaller role and melody taking center stage. Musically, the inspiration comes from an acoustic thought experiment: \"What if folk music had been 'digitized' in the 80s like reggae?\" On the spiritual side and in terms of lyrics, the theme is the continuous loss and grief of friends, family, and colleagues since 2020. However, there is no darkness or gloominess; it is the most melodious and tender masterpiece in Everything Is Recorded's discography. \"It's temporary, exactly. And we're all temporary,\" Russell says. From the early stages of creating \"Temporary,\" Russell began recording his friends' thoughts on death and loss. Those words are included on Temporary as two carefully crafted audio collages by Russell (\"October\" and \"The Summons\"), and their power permeates the entire album. Russell's music dissolves the boundaries between sampling and recording, modern and ancient, life and death, present and eternity. He understands the true meaning of the album's title, Temporary. We may indeed be temporary beings. But our fervent desires for one another, for peace, for love and connection will last forever.
