Born in Chicago to immigrant parents, Frances Chang's sense of sound was shaped by accidental auditory experiences and recorded sounds. Childhood memories of dancing to her mother's piano playing in the living room, the shock of first hearing her own voice recorded on a My First Sony toy, and the movies and literature she grew up with all shaped her interest in narrative, introspection, and the feeling of being \"taken somewhere else\" in her music. Her music is always imbued with a cinematic quality, sometimes sounding like the score of a psychological thriller or a fantasy epic, and other times possessing the intimacy of an indie film depicting a coming-of-age story. The feeling that the digital world is vaster than reality, a feeling brought about by her childhood favorite medieval-style RPG, King's Quest, also underlies the uncanny valley-like world-building that permeates the entirety of \"been thinking bout confession.\" Chang herself describes this work as \"a kind of nested structure of perspectives between the digital and the physical.\" Early musical influences such as Madonna's \"Like a Prayer\" and \"Jesus Christ Superstar\" serve as cultural landmarks while also demonstrating the boundless potential of the voice to convey emotion. The album was recorded at Chang's home in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and at the studio of co-producer Andr?a Schiavelli (Eyes of Love) in Maspeth, Queens. Schiavelli also played electric bass and some additional piano. The strings were arranged by Sammy Weissberg and performed by a quartet consisting of Shaleah Feinstein, Sean Lim, Edwin Kaplan, and Austin Fisher. William Alexander and Liza Winter played drums, and Carolyn Hietter and Jake Tobin played saxophone on \"No avatar.\" Sylvia Gorelick provided the voice acting for the spoken lines at the end of \"Marry.\" Throughout the album, the most important musical element is Chang's voice.
