This quality invigorates the technicolor world of his psychedelic pop project, which originates from Kenton Sound, an underground studio in Portland, Oregon. \"Everywhere you look, there's a new and astonishing gem,\" noted Pitchfork's Philip Sherburn during a visit to Graham's recording space for a feature shortly after the release of his 2021 debut LP, 'The Long and Short of It'. Since then, Graham has formed live bands, released the 'Easy Listening' EP in 2023, worked on production projects (Moses Sumney, Kid LAROI, SahBabii, etc.), and weathered the storms of touring, relationships, and the ups and downs of young musicians. Shaped by personal struggles and conflicts, his long-awaited full-length sequel shows Graham, like a great songwriter, creating universal, endless, and rewarding music. He set out to make a folk album, but couldn't help but infuse it with noise. A rich array of instruments and unexpected sounds come together. Ambitious yet intimate, hi-fi yet naive, the distinctive songs of 'I Heard That Noise' curve along the contours of everyday life with warmth, wit, and dissonance. When asked to unravel the inputs for 'I Heard That Noise,' Graham cited Phil Elverum's (The Microphones \/ Mount Eerie) unpredictable vocal melodies and sound design, Dijon's raw emotion, and Nick Drake's timeless rhythms. While drums were central to 'Easy Listening,' he challenged himself to think outside the beat with new materials. \"I wanted to see how much I could do with a song, especially in the production, without a beat. There are drum moments, but the space in between was more important.\" The songs make full use of intuitive delay and distortion. At times, they melt out of frame before reaching a peak, or abruptly shift with sudden chord changes or shocks that he likens to jump scares in movies. \"I was trying out the idea of ??being comfortable, and then something crazy might come flying in, and you might be taken away for a moment, and then come back again.\" These non-linear choices are effective because Graham remains a natural pop architect, knowing where to push and pull, add and subtract, and essentially, how to capture and retain people's attention. The themes range from recent experiences like the \"miserable period\" after a breakup, or the time when you're just trying to get yourself up, to childhood memories. He and his friends came to call it the \"Kenton Sound\" (which is the origin of the name of his studio), and they traced its source to a nearby industrial testing lab. Every time it vibrates, he remembers hearing \"that sound\" while skateboarding outside his mother's house. A similar sound, but louder, scarier, like a siren in the sky. \"I remember all the neighborhood dogs suddenly starting to bark. That thought pattern was scattered throughout my mind, creating a cathartic space that led to the recording of the title track. In this song, the rough intro disappears and transforms into a sweet piano ballad about remembering and surrendering. Graham has a talent for interludes and outros, and it's on full display on this album. It shifts from the ambient sway of the opening to the powerful rhythm of \"Enything,\" a rhythm that at one point generated so much information that it was enough to buy a new computer. With bright, jagged guitar lines and backing vocals from his friend and former tourmate Julia Logue providing harmonies, Graham playfully talks about everything he does. He says he's not good at writing lyrics, but the loose wordplay in \"Enything\" is evidence of his subconscious working cleverly.\" In \"Take It From Me,\" acoustic drums and gentle keyboards are surrounded by delicate sounds as Graham recalls the resignation of a night when the relationship was nearing its end (\"A big storm is coming over the hill\"). \"I've always found comfort in knowing that other people might feel the same way I do, even if I don't know their exact experiences,\" he explains. The mantra-like reprise of \"Take It From Me\" carries on that idea. The Kenton sound ceiling proves the truth of \"I Punched Through A Wall.\" Graham says the act actually stemmed from a foolish, pushy thought. That image (\"my own silhouette\") became a metaphorical scene enveloping the anger of reality. \"I feel love like a cannonball \/ I like being torn apart,\" he sings in the album's sweetest, most poppy arrangement. As the chorus ends, a gentle piano phrase is cut off by a burst of power chords and feedback, and the lines are repeated at double volume. \"Raven\" blends a fable-like fiction with the sad story of a lost friend, starting with an innocent country sound before ending with a near-metal level of heaviness.
