While her works under her real name, released on the prestigious label Hyperdub, are influenced by IDM and often feature collaborations with vocalists, her alias Whatever The Weather shows an impressionistic and introspective approach. In her second album, 'Whatever The Weather II', a rich world of layered textures flows seamlessly, from hypnotic ambience to mottled rhythms and a collage of diary-like field recordings. The result is a unique, fragmented beauty born from a compelling combination of organic and human elements processed in various digital and analog ways. While the title \"Whatever The Weather\" is based on the \"emotional temperature\" during recording, she states that upon revisiting the recording, it often feels like it's in a completely different place than the temperature on a thermometer. It's the whims of the environment, and compared to her previous work and its Antarctic imagery, \"Whatever The Weather II\" is a warmer work. This is reflected in the desert climate of the cover photo, again shot by Collin Hughes, and the packaging designed by Justin Hunt Sloane. Also common to both albums is the mastering work of friend and collaborator Joshua Eustis (aka Telefon Tel Aviv), who, with his keen ear for complex sounds, creates an astonishingly three-dimensional sound experience. The album opens with \"1??C,\" where Loraine says, \"It's a little chilly... I can't wait for summer,\" as layers of granular sound and scattered vocal samples emerge. This indescribable mood continues into \"3??C,\" where high-frequency vibrations soar through the stereo field, a powerful, minimalist kick shakes broken speaker cones, and expansive synth harmonies burst forth before fading into mist. The album's longest track, \"20??C,\" begins with a daydream amidst a clamor of conversation and minor-key chords before blossoming into a series of glitchy, staccato percussion patterns. \"8??C\" rides on a wandering keyboard line adorned with minimal counterpoint. In these moments, Loraine effortlessly derives order from scattered ideas, and playful spontaneity weaves a common thread. Speaking about this project, she points out that her first LP, *Whatever The Weather* (Ghostly, 2022), was made around the same time as *Reflection* (Hyperdub, 2021), and that there was a certain degree of stylistic interaction between her two musical approaches. At the time, she told Pitchfork's Philip Sherburne about her thoughts on genres: \"Yes, I may look different to most people who make IDM, and I come from a different era, but I don't really care whether the word is negative or positive. I think my music is IDM, and I draw inspiration from other things and fuse them together while creating my own arrangements.\" For this project, she dedicated several months to focusing her energy on developing this alias and its characteristics. There were no collaborators, few beats, and the process was primarily based on instinct and improvisation. The album's distinctive sound stems from her preference for hardware over software. The synthesizer batteries are modulated, transformed, and reconstructed by numerous pedals, with little overdubbing, effectively pinning each arrangement at the moment it was created. In post-production, the greatest effort was dedicated to the sequences, which the artist considers most important. Overall, the suite exhibits a tide befitting the changing seasons and a sense of naturalistic grace. In this piece, echoes that resonate in the minds of children in a Tokyo playground pierce through intermittently resonating silences and are enveloped in off-quilted, bubble-like tones. Here, Loraine elevates one of her many strengths?her fearless approach to sonic collage?with ambitious experimentation and a surprising tempo. Not content to linger in the same sonic space, \"15??C\" is followed by soft pads and shimmering counter-melodies, suddenly joined by a jarring, periodic rhythm that mimics loose parts in a rotating machine. As with much of Loraine's work, it possesses an internal logic that only makes sense in her hands. The closing track, \"12??C,\" drifts from a bustling human space into a concrete groove, weaving melody and texture to create a truly rare, soul-stirring sense of fulfillment. In its final moments, we hear for the first time a melancholic acoustic guitar and gently tapped beats over her pitch-shifted voice. This is a callback that concludes the album with ironic ambiguity, a hint that there is more to be found beyond the horizon. \"Whatever The Weather II\" is full of fascinating moments that defy convention with its formal structure reminiscent of a negative film, and with its wit, intelligence, and skill.
