As the world turned upside down by the pandemic, Horse Lords were forced to cancel their tour for their early 2020 album 'The Common Task' and quickly returned to their Baltimore studio to begin assembling the music that would become 'Comradely Objects' (Bernstein, Eilbacher, and Gardner later moved to Germany). Moving away from the trial-and-error method of refining new music during tours, the quartet reduced the energy required to ensure live performance and focused on rehearsals and recording. Unusually, the band took their time composing and recording, resulting in a collection of works that represent a new peak in their creativity and musicality, free from the pitfalls of aimless studio work and instead offering a fulfilling experience. The album reflects several notable stylistic innovations alongside familiar elements that make up Horse Lords' established palette: minimalism, mantra-like repetitions from global traditional music, complex counterpoint, microtonal delicacy, and a wide range of timbres and textures drawn from the avant-garde. This album is closer to free jazz than the band's other works, possesses an electro-acoustic spectrum, and pulsates with unexpected, unconventional, yet lively synthesizers.
