Sam Precop boasts a career spanning over 25 years since The Sea and Cake's debut, and over 20 years as a solo artist. Since their third album, \"Old Punch Card,\" in 2010, perhaps to differentiate themselves from the band, they have refrained from using their incredibly captivating vocals and released instrumental works primarily featuring modular synthesizers. However, their new album, their first in five and a half years since \"The Republic,\" boldly incorporates rhythm and beat programming for the first time in their last three works. Although it is an instrumental album primarily produced with analog synthesizers (this album uses not only modular synthesizers, but also monophonic synthesizers, and analog and digital polyphonic synthesizers), it has a very poppy feel. Inspired by Aphex Twin's masterpieces \"Selected Ambient Works 85-92\" and \"Selected Ambient Works Volume II,\" as well as classic 80s Japanese new age and ambient works by Yasuaki Shimizu, Yoshio Ojima, Inoyama Land, and others who have recently gained attention overseas (Sam had been paying attention to them even before the release of \"Kanky? Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental \u0026amp; New Age Music 1980-1990\"), and classic 90s minimal techno albums by Basic Channel, Robert Hood, and others, this album is a nostalgic yet fresh pop album that hints at a new ambient feel (described in materials created by Thrill Jockey as a work in the vein of Brian Eno and YMO). The mixing was handled by John McEntire, a bandmate who has now moved his base to Portland, and the mastering was handled by Taylor Deupree, who runs the NY label 12K and is well-known in Japan as a collaborator with Ryuichi Sakamoto, marking the first time he has worked with Deupree. The Japanese edition includes one bonus track (a brand new song mixed by John McEntire). The CD will be released in Japan first (approximately one month earlier). (C)RS\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAbout the Artist: Born in London, England, and raised in Chicago, USA, Sam Precop gained attention in the late 80s as a member of Shrimp Boat, and formed The Sea and Cake after Shrimp Boat disbanded in 1993. In 1999, alongside his work with The Sea and Cake, he released his first solo album, \"Sam Prekop,\" produced by Jim O'Rourke. In 2005, he released his second solo album, \"Who's Your New Professor,\" with the same recording members as his first solo album, except for Jim. Since \"Old Punch Card\" in 2010, which had a CD cover hand-drawn by him as its initial release, his solo works have been instrumental albums primarily featuring modular synthesizers. In 2015, he released \"The Republic\" (selected as one of Pitchfork's 20 Overlooked Records of 2015), the first half of which was created as a score for a video installation of the same name by filmmaker David Hartt. In addition to his five solo albums on Thrill Jockey, he composed the score for the 2012 film \"Pavilion\" by filmmaker Tim Sutton, and in 2013, a package containing the film's DVD and the soundtrack on vinyl was released by Factory 25 in Brooklyn. In 2017, he participated in the 7th installment of the popular compilation series \"Casiotone Compilation\" from \"aotoao,\" the 8cm CD label run by ASUNA. In 2019, he released the collaborative track \"Kreuzung\" with John McEntire on Poland's Don't Sit On My Vinyl! (a limited edition 10-inch split record of 66 copies with Stefan Schneider's Mapstation). In January 2020, he released a split EP with Mute Gospel (one of its members, Mike Boyd, is a Thrill Jockey staff member) (each containing two tracks) digitally only.
